Find out what’s hidden in seismometer noise

The chance discovery that spikes in seismometer noise recorded in Africa corresponded with soccer matches has led to the discovery that there’s a lot more buried in the noise, says a  seismologist and his adviser in the Department of Earth and Planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences. The findings include a signal from the famous storms of the Southern Atlantic Ocean, the bane of ships of sail. FULL STORY

Ford launches Sam Fox lecture series

Edward Ford is a writer and architect whose two-volume The Details of Modern Architecture provided the first comprehensive analysis of how detailing and construction techniques can distort, camouflage or enhance a building. Selected plays will be workshopped over a two-week period this fall with a guest dramaturg, WUSTL actors and a Performing Arts Department faculty director. One winning play will be selected for production during the 2012-13 season.

  • Women’s basketball on a roll. The No. 10 women’s basketball team improved to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in conference with a pair of home victories last weekend at the Field House. The Bears saw four players score in double figures in a 94-55 victory over Emory Jan. 14. Two days later, WUSTL used career-highs from seniors Kathryn Berger and Alex Hoover to hold off No. 5 University of Rochester in a 101-90 double-overtime thriller.
